Hello! My name is Maddy McKeever. Some of you may know me, some of you may not, but I am a graduating classics minor. While at the UW, I’ve had a lot of fun taking classes in the classics department. However, I know some people don’t have room in their schedules to take multiple classics courses, or simply want more opportunities to engage with the history and texts.
So, I was wondering if people would be interested in participating in a Classics club that could meet up on campus on occasion throughout the next school year (and possibly beyond). It would be open to both current students and alumni who want to stay immersed in classics. We could do several different things in it.
I would love to start a book club! We could get together and read (or reread) ancient texts, then we could discuss; we’d be free to talk about whatever we wanted, and free from classwork and other scholastic obligations.
In addition to that, it’s been brought to my attention that several people are interested in playing Dungeons & Dragons versions of some of the texts and tales. For those of you who don’t know, it is a roleplaying-based tabletop game where basically someone runs a story plot and you as a player improv as the character you create. It could be very fun, and be an interesting way to engage with the texts, as well as parody them.
There will be a general interest meeting for the group on Monday Sept 25. If you are interested in being a part of this, please feel free to email clasdept@uw.edu, and you will be added to a list for a reminder email when it gets closer to the actual date.
