Dstinguished poet and translator David Ferry will give the annual Theodore Roethke Memorial Poetry Reading at the Roethke Auditorium at Kane Hall (there will be a reception with Mr. Ferry after the event).
David Ferry is the author of eight books of poetry, including Bewilderment, winner of the 2012 National Book Award and praised in The New Yorker as 'one of the great books of poetry of this young century.' His many honors include the Lenore Marshall Prize, the Bingham Poetry Prize, the Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry from the Library of Congress and the Ruth Lily Life Prize for lifetime achievement. In addition to -- and inextricable from -- his work as a poet, Ferry is perhaps the most acclaimed and lauded translator of classical poetry alive today. David Ferry's translations of Gilgamesh, the Odes of Horace and the Eclogues and Georgics of Virgil have received the Harold Morton Landon Translation Award and the William Arrowsmith Translation Prize from AGNI magazine. He is currently at work on a translation of Virgil’s Aeneid, sections of which have appeared in Poetry and other journals. David Ferry is the Sophie Chantal Hart Professor Emeritus of English at Wellesley College and a visiting lecturer in creative writing at Boston University.
