Joel Kalvesmaki, after graduating from UW with a major in Classics in 1999, went to Washington, DC and received his MA and PhD at Catholic University of America in 2006. Thereafter he served as editor of Byzantine Studies at Dumbarton Oaks until he left in 2019 to pursue a second career as a programmer with the Government Publishing Office. He is currently editor for the Journal of the Text Encoding Initiative, the series editor for Christianity in Late Antiquity (University of California Press), and he maintains the Text Alignment Network (https://textalign.net) and the Guide to Evagrius Ponticus (https://evagriusponticus.net). He also holds a research fellowship at Catholic University of America. Among his many publications, his co-translation of Evagrius Pontus, The Gnostic Trilogy, appeared December 2024 (Oxford University Press). He currently has three articles in press, four articles underway, and another book started. If that were not enough, he and his wife bought a 22-acre farm in central Virginia (not far from Charlottesville) in summer 2022, where they raise goats, chickens, turkeys and other wonderful things.
