Announcing the Lawrence Bliquez Endowed Student Support Fund

Submitted by Deborah E Kamen on

The Department of Classics is delighted to announce the establishment of the Lawrence Bliquez Endowed Student Support Fund for Classics, a gift of Laura Matz and Trevor Peterson. This fund is designed to provide broad-based support for undergraduate students in the Department of Classics, helping to cover educational expenses, research, travel costs, and study abroad.

An alumna of UW, Laura Matz wanted to honor her former first-year Greek teacher with a fund that would support future students. As she says, “On day one he warned us that Ancient Greek was demanding, and boy was he right! Still, he never expected more from his students than he gave. Every single day he showed up with his vast knowledge, love of the Classics, enthusiasm and wonderful sense of humor. I am honored to be able to acknowledge his impact on so many students’ lives. Professor Bliquez made my life better. My education at the University of Washington made my life better.”

The winner of a UW Distinguished Teaching Award (1998), Prof. Emeritus Larry Bliquez is the author of Roman Surgical Instruments and Other Minor Objects in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (1994) and The Tools of Asclepius: Surgical Instruments in Greek and Roman Times (2015), as well as many articles.
