Submitted by Deborah E Kamen on

We are delighted to announce that Dr. Ray Lahiri will be joining the Department of Classics in fall 2024 as an Assistant Professor of Roman History. Dr. Lahiri earned his BA from the University of Pennsylvania with a double major in Classical Studies and Comparative Literature, and his PhD in Classics and Comparative Literature from Yale University. In his dissertation, “Violence and the Political in Greek and Latin Historical Narrative,” he examined how ancient historians (including Herodotus, Livy, Josephus, Tacitus, and Procopius) understand and represent the relationship between violence and politics. Dr. Lahiri’s work is distinguished both for its attention to philological detail and for its incredible breadth, covering both Greek and Latin texts, and texts that span over a millennium! He is also interested in the literary history of Roman North Africa and in global and comparative premodern studies more broadly. We are very excited to welcome him to UW!
