The Department of Classics at the University of Washington stands in solidarity with the Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander communities in the wake of the horrific shootings in the Atlanta area. We are deeply saddened by the deaths of Daoyou Feng, Hyun Jung Grant, Suncha Kim, Paul Andre Michels, Soon Chung Park, Xiaojie Tan, Delaina Ashley Yaun, and Yong Ae Yue. We affirm that experiences of racism have been a persistent and ugly reality for Asian Americans since the first immigrants arrived in the United States from Asia. Last week’s events contribute to a long and upsetting history of violence against Asian Americans, which includes Japanese internment, the murder of Vincent Chen, and the destruction of Koreatown during the LA riots in 1992.

In solidarity with the Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander communities locally and across the country, faculty members in the Department of Classics have made donations to the following organizations:

ACRS (Asian Counseling and Referral Service)

CAAL (Coalition of Asian American Leaders)

CID (Chinatown International District) Coalition

CISC (Chinese Information and Service Center) Seattle

DVAN (Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network)

Red Canary Song

Seattle AAPIP (Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy)
