Congratulations to Grace Funsten, winner of the 2018 CAMWS Presidential Award for Outstanding Graduate Student Paper for “A Learned Dog: Roman Elegy and the Epitaph for Margarita”! In this paper, Grace convincingly shows that CIL 6.29896 (a Latin epitaph for a dog named Margarita) draws on elegiac language and themes, suggesting that it may have been intended as a parody of elegy. An abstract of this paper, which draws on the paper Grace wrote for Prof. Sarah Levin-Richardson’s graduate seminar on Latin epigraphy, can be found here.
