Syllabus Description (from Canvas):
Latin 462 W 2026
Catherine Connors, Department of Classics
For this version of Latin 462, we will explore various visions of the good life. Our main focus will be on reading Horace’s Satires in Latin. In these poems, Horace uses concise and vivid sketches from relatively ordinary life to showcase examples of good and bad behavior. We will explore literary, philosophical, and political aspects of Horace’s characterful and funny scenes. We will also spend some time contrasting and comparing Horace’s satiric perspectives on the good life with a few short selections from Lucretius’ exposition of Epicurean philosophy in de rerum Natura. Course requirements will include: midterm, final, short presentation.
