Syllabus Description:

We will read Plato’s Symposium and discuss both literary and philosophical interpretive issues, covering about two thirds of the text in Greek and the rest in English. A few secondary readings (scholarly works or other works by Plato to be read in English) will be assigned for class discussion and short written response. There will be a midterm, a final, and a short term paper.

If you wish to take this course for graduate credit, you will read the whole Symposium in Greek and write a more substantial paper.
