Syllabus Description (from Canvas):

Vision and Viewership in Roman Culture

In this class, we examine how the Romans discussed their relationship with vision and art. Topics to be explored include scientific theories of vision (i.e., the theory of vision in Lucretius), literary ekphrasis, vision and morality (e.g., as discussed by Seneca), sight and disability studies, polychromy, and the depiction and viewership of different types of individuals (including those of various legal statuses, ethnic origins, and genders). Case studies will be drawn from literary and artistic evidence. No previous experience is required.

The scholarship of John Clarke and Verity Platt will be featured early in the quarter in advance of their respective visits!!
